About Hilltrip's Carbon-Offset Program
Hilltrip's Carbon-Offset Program, is the newest project undertaken by the organization. The main focus of the program is on the emissions caused by travelling to the mountains, and to Whistler more precisely. As carbon dioxide is a bi-product of nearly all forms of travel, it is a fundamental contributor to global warming. As both environmental enthusiasts and avid snowboarders ourselves, we realize the consequences our actions are having on our beloved mountain ecosystems.
Right now, the program is in the Market Research Phase. Marie Fortin and Haley Haggerstone, a Natural Resources Conservation undergraduate at UBC, are looking at what is being done internationally. The objectives of the program are to increase awareness of the causal effects of human behavior on global warming as well as to offer solutions to people who want to neutralize their carbon emissions. We hope to ensure the solutions will be offered at reasonable cost and hopefully tax deductible. This will essentially provide further incentive for the public to make more sustainable decisions in their travels.
By accessing a carbon calculator, such as the one found on the Offsetters website at http://www.offsetters.ca/calculators_flights.htm, individuals will be able to calculate the amount of carbon (in the form of carbon dioxide or CO2) produced through their travel means. Hilltrip hopes that by using the interactive calculator individuals will become more aware of their impact on the environment. Hilltrip will also provide the option for conscious individuals to balance these emissions by purchasing carbon offsets. As part of the market research phase, we are currently looking at what form of offsets will be offered and at the development of various fossil-fuel reduction projects for potential offset ventures. These projects may include energy saving and/or renewable energy sources.
